Can you powder coat plastics?

Yes plastics can be powder coated. Higher temperature engineering polymer plastics such as Grivory, PBT, PET, Zytel, Minlon, Nylon, and other reinforced and non-reinforced specialist plastics can all be powder coated.
Powder coating can now be applied to these plastics to provide the diverse colour range, texture effects and metallic effects previously only applied to metal components.

What are the benefits of powder coating plastic?

Building on the back of our previous research efforts with DuPont and a number of other suppliers, Advanced Colour Coatings are able to offer specialist powder coating of plastics.

The benefits of powder coating plastic include increased durability, and a higher level of UV resistance. Powder coating can also change the aesthetics of plastic with a diverse range of colours and textures available.

These benefits combined with Advance Colour Coatings knowledge of the powder coating industry has enabled a variety of different customers across a diverse range of industries such as automotive, electronics, and medical to improve both their products and production lines.

Reducing costs and improving efficiency

The application of powder coating to plastic can save on inventory in coloured resins for plastic moulding companies.
Plastic moulding companies can now carry out more cost effective runs of components in a single base colour, saving them time and money. These components can be left in their natural finish and colour. While the application of powder coating provides a new finish and colour. In addition a clear coat powder coating can also be applied over the colour powder coating to give a depth of field to any finish.

Is it easy to powder coat plastic?

The powder coating of plastic has to be a carefully controlled process, like any surface treatment process. The most important stage is the application of a conductive primer that will adhere to the plastic surface and also the applied powder coating. Process parameters have to be tightly controlled to ensure a capable process that is repeatable in volume and consistency of finish. ACC have over 20 years’ experience in the powder coating of plastics.

What are the costs of powder coating plastic?

The costs will be project dependant on the batch volumes, surface area and type of powder coating required. The costs will be higher than the pricing for equivalent metal components due to the additional conductive priming stage.
